Tobias Sammet

Tobias Sammet (born November 21, 1977 in Fulda) is a German singer, multi-instrumentalist and frontman of the German power metal band Edguy, as well as the creator of the supergroup Avantasia.

Tobias primarily plays two instruments: the bass guitar and keyboards (including piano and organ).

Keyboards / Piano / Organ: Tobias started playing the organ at the age of seven. He composes almost all of his music on the piano. Within both Edguy and Avantasia, he has played the keyboards and organ on various albums.

Bass guitar: In the early years of Edguy (on the demos and the first two studio albums), he was the band's permanent bassist. He also regularly played the bass guitar in the studio for his metal opera Avantasia.

Guitar (limited): He is sometimes also linked to the guitar for writing riffs or demo recordings, although he always leaves the actual guitar work on the official albums to his guitarists.

Tobias has been interested in music since childhood, when he received an organ, which he began playing at age 6. At 10, he met Jens Ludwig. Together with him, Dirk Sauer, and Dominik Storch, he founded Edguy.

His vocal style owes much to the singers he draws inspiration from: Michael Kiske, Paul Stanley, Bon Scott, André Matos, Biff Byford, Klaus Meine, and Bruce Dickinson, among others. Tobias has also never hidden his love for bands such as Deep Purple, AC/DC, Queen, Iron Maiden, Helloween, and Scorpions.

With Edguy, Tobias took his first professional steps, quickly achieving fame in the metal scene after releasing several albums that charted worldwide, followed by world tours. He later founded the Avantasia project, a choral metal opera shared with many famous metal singers, and released a double concept album titled The Metal Opera.

Originally born as a studio project unsustainable as a live act because of the large number of people working on the project, after the 2 ep's, Lost in Space Part I and Lost in Space Part II, Tobias relaunched Avantasia in 2008 with the album The Scarecrow, as a live touring band, and since then has regularly released albums and toured as a full-fledged band.

The real turning point for the project came when he was offered the evening stage slot at Wacken Open Air in 2008, with Avantasia. Since then, Tobias has staged his side project as a true metal big band, regularly touring North and South America, Asia, and Europe.

He also appears as a guest on Rob Rock's album Holy Hell, on the metal opera Aina and on the album "New Era" by Timo Tolkki's Revolution Renaissance, and on the song Lost on the Road to Eternity from the album of the same name, by the English band Magnum in 2018, after numerous participations of the latter's singer, Bob Catley in the Avantasia project.

Curiosity

In 2011, readers of Japanese Burrn! Magazine voted him best songwriter after simultaneously releasing the double concept albums The Wicked Symphony and Angel of Babylon. This release features the hottest names of the moment: Jørn Lande, Russell Allen, Eric Singer, Jon Oliva, Michael Kiske, Andre Matos, Bob Catley, Tim “Ripper” Owens, and many others. The two albums contain 21 songs, all written by Tobias.

During a concert with his band Edguy at the Bang Your Head!!! Festival in 2012, Tobias fell from the stage, breaking his nose and several ribs. Despite these injuries, he performed the entire set before being hospitalized.

Tobias Sammet has sold over three million records, participated in 12 world tours in over 40 countries, achieved strong chart positions in every country worldwide,

and played at every major festival (including 10 shows at Wacken Open Air).

His two projects, Avantasia and Edguy, are currently alive and well; Tobias constantly alternates between the two productions, both live and in the studio.

He is a Bayern Munich fan.
