Tobias Sammet (born November 21, 1977 in Fulda) is a German singer, multi-instrumentalist and frontman of the German power metal band Edguy, as well as the creator of the supergroup Avantasia.
Tobias primarily plays two instruments: the bass guitar and keyboards (including piano and organ).
Keyboards / Piano / Organ: Tobias started playing the organ at the age of seven. He composes almost all of his music on the piano. Within both Edguy and Avantasia, he has played the keyboards and organ on various albums.
Bass guitar: In the early years of Edguy (on the demos and the first two studio albums), he was the band's permanent bassist. He also regularly played the bass guitar in the studio for his metal opera Avantasia.
Guitar (limited): He is sometimes also linked to the guitar for writing riffs or demo recordings, although he always leaves the actual guitar work on the official albums to his guitarists.
Tobias has been interested in music since childhood, when he received an organ, which he began playing at age 6. At 10, he met Jens Ludwig. Together with him, Dirk Sauer, and Dominik Storch, he founded Edguy.
His vocal style owes much to the singers he draws inspiration from: Michael Kiske, Paul Stanley, Bon Scott, André Matos, Biff Byford, Klaus Meine, and Bruce Dickinson, among others. Tobias has also never hidden his love for bands such as Deep Purple, AC/DC, Queen, Iron Maiden, Helloween, and Scorpions.
With Edguy, Tobias took his first professional steps, quickly achieving fame in the metal scene after releasing several albums that charted worldwide, followed by world tours. He later founded the Avantasia project, a choral metal opera shared with many famous metal singers, and released a double concept album titled The Metal Opera.
Originally born as a studio project unsustainable as a live act because of the large number of people working on the project, after the 2 ep's, Lost in Space Part I and Lost in Space Part II, Tobias relaunched Avantasia in 2008 with the album The Scarecrow, as a live touring band, and since then has regularly released albums and toured as a full-fledged band.
