Wings (previously known as Teruna Sekampung) is a Malaysian Rock band formed in 1985 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. At the time of its formation, the band consisted of five original members consisting of Awie (Singer), Syam (Lead Guitar), Baharom (Rhythm Guitar), Ipin (Bass Guitar) and Jojet (Drums) where Awie, Jojet and Syam were students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Ampang (formerly Ampang Road Boys School). However, the number of members has changed when several members have changed. The line-up of Awie, Joe, Eddie and Black is a line-up that has taken a long time to form this band where this band has achieved all its own glory until now which still does not have a group artist at the moment. Eddie who started his career before becoming an artist joined the band Teruna Sekampung and then they changed their name to establish the name Wings and Eddie became the artist and mainstay of the Wings band until now. Since the creation of the Wings brand, Eddie is the only member and mainstay of Wings who has never left or been removed from the group compared to other Wings members.
On October 31, 2015, in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Wings group, Wings held a large-scale historic concert with the theme '30 Years Wings Concert' at the Merdeka Stadium in Kuala Lumpur which successfully captivated more than 20 thousand spectators.
To date, Wings has released eleven studio albums excluding special albums, compilations, concerts and studio albums with Search. Almost all of Wings' albums have achieved sales to the Platinum Award, Double Platinum Award, Triple Platinum Award and even Quadraple Platinum Award. Wings' 11th studio album, Menakluk Kosmos (2014) has sold 10,000 units. Wings has also not been left behind to venture into the film industry, having already appeared in six films, including Pemburu Bayang (1993) and Leftwings (2012).
At the end of 2016, Wings members were reduced to just three, namely Awie, Eddie and Black, after lead guitarist Joe left the group at the end of 2016 due to internal problems he faced after 28 years of going through ups and downs with Wings and at the same time, Joe did not perform with Wings in a concert in Melaka. And this makes Eddie the founder and the only single member and the most loyal mainstay to last long in Wings because previously Awie, Syam and Black had left the group at some point in the past where Awie left Wings after the Double Trouble Concert in late 1993, Syam after the first album Belenggu Irama (1987) and Black after the album Teori Domino (1990).
After Joe left the group at the end of 2016, Wings temporarily used the name Wings & Superfriends for the Wings & Superfriends: Belenggu Irama Concert held at the Istana Budaya in 2017. This was because Wings agreed to require the services of two experienced lead guitarists, namely Syam, who is also an original member of Wings and Edrie Hashim (Former member of Chapters Group) as guest musicians who were given the title Superfriends to replace Joe. In 2018, Syam and Edrie officially joined Wings after Awie, Eddie and Black agreed to make the Wings group 5 members and the name Wings & Superfriends was no longer used.
To date, Wings consists of Awie (Vocals), Syam (Lead Guitar), Edrie (Lead Guitar), Eddie (Bass Guitar) and Black (Drums).
Founding and Early Success (1984-1987)
The history of the establishment began around 1984 at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Ampang, Kuala Lumpur. There, a group of five young teenagers of about the same age, namely Awie (Singer), Syam (Main Guitar), Baharom (Second Guitar), Ipin (Bass Guitar) and Jojet (Drums) who were still demanding to join forces to establish a school band club led by Awie. Because they were motivated and very interested in music, especially Rock rhythms, they reached an agreement to sing Rock 'N' Roll rhythmic songs throughout their performances. Because of their interest in group music, at that time they began to practice playing music very hard even though this group did not yet have a group name.
After they were confident in their respective talents in playing music, they agreed to establish a band called the Teruna Sekampung group. Although their respective talents were still being explored, too raw and inexperienced, they showed their determination to entertain in small venues and wedding parties under the name Teruna Sekampung.
However, around 1985, the members of Teruna Sekampung wanted to decide to leave, which hit this group when Baharom and Ipin decided to leave Teruna Sekampung because they both wanted to form a group called Down Wheels with Samad and then form a group called Maiden Peace with Deli, Stood and Boy. The vacancy was replaced by Rahmat, Zul and Rashib who was absorbed as a keyboardist who at that time had left the previous group Mountain Teen (now called Bloodshed). That was enough to make six members in this group.
Not long after that, Rahmat, Rashib, Zul and Jojet also decided to leave Teruna Sekampung. After four people left Teruna Sekampung, Zul and Jojet wanted to form a group called Sivilnius with Kid, Erma Fatima and Zarith while with the two people, Rahmat took on the role of singer and Rashib took on the role of drummer to form a group called Diamond Head and then they changed their name to form the name Ekamatra. Only Awie and Syam remained and it was officially predicted that this group would be buried due to the loss of the bass guitarist and drummer.
In the same year, Awie and Syam did not give up on activating this group, coincidentally Awie who already knew Black who also finished school and was a drummer for the Babylon group, Awie borrowed Black's services. Syam introduced Eddie to Awie, a bass guitar player who had talent but was still looking for a career as an artist. Awie was attracted by Eddie's character and actions as a bass guitar player and did not delay any longer to invite Eddie to join the Teruna Sekampung group to replace Zul as a bass guitar player while Rahmat and Rashib were not replaced. So there Eddie was also an original member of the Wings group.
Not long after, by chance, the Babylon group was hit by a split and Black immediately resumed his service with Teruna Sekampung. Teruna Sekampung changed his mind and agreed to reduce two more member vacancies, making only four members in this group. This meeting was the starting point for changing the name of Teruna Sekampung to Wings. The group's name was the best choice because they thought Awie's muscles and arms looked like 'Wings' (in English translation 'Wing'). So with that, their final chosen name was the group Wings (in Malay translation 'Sayap-Sayap or Wings-Wings'). Wings was formed with 4 members, namely Awie (singer), Syam (lead guitar), Eddie (bass guitar) and Black (drums).
After the three members of Wings finished school, Wings began to spend a lot of time playing music such as in nightclubs, fun fairs and weddings. During that time, Wings were very dedicated to showing their respective talents, creating songs and practicing hard to produce their first album.
In 1987, their efforts were successful when Wings received an offer to record an album under the ASP label company. Wings worked hard to prepare their first album, and finally their ambition was achieved with the release of their first studio album titled Belenggu Irama which was released in 1987, produced by the talented composer who is also a singer, M. Nasir. When rock music began to gain ground, the emergence of a group like Wings certainly warmed up the rock music arena in our country.
Wings appeared with their own uniqueness with the music they brought, which was quite solid even though this was their first album. With good music arrangements and energetic singing and assisted by talented composers and lyricists such as M. Nasir, J. S. Kevin, Bob Lokman, Wings' first fight in the national art scene showed results when this album received an encouraging response. Although they had to face the problem that their songs were not approved for broadcast on radio and television by Radio Television Malaysia (RTM), rock music lovers were still able to feel the heat of Belenggu Irama.
Songs such as Belenggu Irama, Intan Ku Kesepian, Biarkan Berlalu, Inspirasi Taming Sari and Peronda Jaket Biru are among the songs that have become a craze for Malaysian teenagers. RTM did not approve the broadcast of Wings' songs on the grounds that the lyrics of the song and the image of Wings' clothing were said to be excessive and did not comply with the standards set for broadcast on television. This obstacle haunted them to some extent. However, thanks to the perseverance and support of friends and fans who stood firmly behind them, Wings managed to overcome all trials and challenges.
This album sold more than 180,000 units. An achievement with a greater impact than the sales of the first and second albums of the group Search, which was the number one rock band in the country before the album Fenomena was released. After that, Wings' popularity continued to increase. Their concerts were often held at fun fair and expo sites which always stole the attention of many and the average fan was very entertained by Wings' solid performances and had their own identity.
Major Exposition, Joe's Participation After Sham, Forbidden Goods, Peak of Fame, Golden Age, Black Out - Jojet In, Long Hair Issue, Double Trouble with Search and Onto the Silver Screen (1988-1993)
But in 1988, the withdrawal and change of members of Wings occurred when Sham as the lead guitarist withdrew to form the group CRK, Strangers and later Sham changed his name to E'pen to join the group The Rain Forest and then they changed their name to Ad Hoc as a solo singer and the vacancy was replaced by Tham Wing Kwan. A Chinese lead guitarist who was fluent in Malay and had a Malay rock soul, but due to his family's wishes he did not stay long and did not have time to be with Wings to release the next album. Not long after that, by chance, Awie, Eddie and Black met Joe, a left-handed lead guitarist in his teens who was also an original member of the lead guitarist Blood World (now called Terra Rossa) and the Scandals group.
Awie suggested that Wings borrow Joe's services temporarily because he was involved in mini concerts, then Joe reached an agreement with his Scandals friends to agree to his services being borrowed by Wings in order to earn more money by joining Wings temporarily or on loan. Finally, Tham's place was taken over by Joe. Joe's position in Wings was said to be only temporary or on loan because Joe was still a permanent member of the Scandals group. Because Wings received many offers to play concerts such as fun fairs, nightclubs, Joe's services were very much needed by Wings, not to mention Joe was very creative in playing lead guitar.
Not long after, by chance, the Scandals group was in the midst of a breakup, so Joe made the final decision to continue his services with the Wings group, which still did not have a permanent lead guitarist. Wings confirmed Joe to join Wings. Joe's presence further strengthened Wings because he was naturally talented, creative and had high skills in playing lead guitar. Joe proved his existing talent as Wings' lead guitarist through Wings' second studio album titled Hukum Karma which was released in 1988. Wings' concerts that stood out at fun fairs and expo sites made this group increasingly popular. Wings' manager was Bob Lokman from 1985 to 1989. Success peaked even though the song "Taman Rashidah Utama" was only runner-up and the song "Misteri Mimpi Syakila" was in third place in the 1989 Muzik-Muzik competition.
However, Black was awarded the award as the best drummer in the country in Singapore. For the first time, Wings received a special appearance in the film Mat Som. Then Wings was taken over by Ali Bakar as Wings' manager. Wings made the final decision to choose to become an artist of Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG) Malaysia. Wings managed to create popularity alongside popular rock bands in Malaysia such as Search and Lefthanded. The album Teori Domino appeared in 1990. The song "Sejati" immediately brought Wings to become the most popular rock band. In addition, Wings did not miss out on producing a video clip for the song "Alam Barzakh" which also became popular.
Since the album Teori Domino was released, Wings were no longer eligible to hold concerts at fun fair sites, instead their increasingly fierce and venomous concerts had to be held in larger venues on the stage. "Black always got drunk after the competition but it never reached the point where it would affect the competition itself. The competition was always first and foremost with Black. When the performance started to take second place, the problems began", Awie recalled. "The distance between Black and the others had grown to an unusable part", according to Joe.
"It's a tragedy to say it but Black was one of those fierce people who couldn't face the fact that things were wrong and he sought solace in a bottle", commented Black. At that time Wings were suddenly under suspicion when Black, who had not long before won the national best drummer award in Singapore, Black decided to leave Wings because it was understood that Black was not satisfied with Wings' management. Further news about Black's withdrawal failed to be interviewed by reporters. Although Black officially withdrew from Wings due to drunkenness and drug addiction, Black's good relationship with Awie and Joe, Wings remained clear.
Black's place was replaced by former original Teruna Sekampung member Jojet (Former drummer of the Gersang group) who joined Wings. Wings tried to pay a total of RM7, 000 to a recording company to redeem Jojet's agreement who was still a member of Gersang. After that Wings participated in the 5th Anugerah Juara Lagu competition. Lagu Sejati won the best performance category and third place in the song champion category in the competition awards. The following year, 1991, the album Jerangkung Dalam Almari was marketed.
Jojet's name immediately rose in impact and compatibility with Wings. After the album containing the solid song titled "R 'N' R Lu Punya Suka" was marketed, M. Nasir wrote that Wings was the number one most popular rock band in the country and the most difficult group artist to compete with any local group artist including Amy Search, but Search dismissed M. Nasir's claim because Search was confident that they were still popular in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia. Search still gave fierce competition to determine its position as the number one rock band in the country. In addition, Wings dominated the stage and concert ticket sales throughout the country compared to other rock bands including Search.
Near the end of 1991, Wings held a large-scale concert at the Kuala Lumpur National Stadium which successfully attracted more than 20 thousand spectators. In 1992, Wings, who had never released a compilation album, came out with their first compilation album titled Terunggul after releasing four studio albums. More interestingly, in the same year, Wings released their second compilation album titled Best Of Wings which contained a bonus song titled "Hutan Simpan". Apart from the bonus songs, the special feature of this second compilation album is that Wings has played and re-recorded several songs with Awie's voice, which is the latest after Awie underwent surgery to break his voice box several times not long before, such as "Inspirasi Taming Sari", "Intanku kesepain", "Belenggu Irama", "Hikayat Penuh Ranjau", "Taman Rashidah Utama" and "Misteri Mimpi Syakila". The songs in the compilation are more impactful and different than those from the previous studio albums, namely "Belenggu Irama" and "Hukum Karma".
The issue of long hair made Wings under suspicion when their songs were glued to radio and television channels by the Minister of Information of Malaysia. The issue became hot news and a sensation in the entertainment industry between Search and Wings until Dato Mohamed Rahmat, who held the position of Minister of Information of Malaysia, was able to resolve the issue. Once the long hair issue was resolved, Search and Wings reached an agreement to release an album titled Double Trouble in 1992. The album was indeed expected to explode in the market and received a double platinum award. The same year, apart from Wings being called the most popular rock band in the country, Wings including their manager Ali Bakar for the first time received an offer to act on the silver screen under the direction of Yusof Haslam, in a film titled Pemburu Bayang which contained the songs Rantai and Sejati. The film was released in cinemas the following year, 1993. The response to the film Pemburu Bayang was very surprising and proud. Even more surprising was that the film was the first Malay film to 'break the stage' in Malaysia.
Wings became increasingly busy and worked hard in the art world, then they marketed their fifth album titled Bazooka Penaka in 1993 which was less than a week on the market and managed to reach sales of 125,000 units. The fifth studio album was Wings' first album to record several songs in Melbourne, Australia. The song "Bernafas Dalam Lumpur" became a popular song that received a lot of attention.
Wings once again won the platinum award and the best album recording category in the Music Industry Awards (AIM) on the success of the Bazooka Penaka album. From one album after another Wings released, all of their albums often received a very great response and managed to win the Platinum Award including the album Double Trouble (Together with Search). Not long after the Bazooka Penaka album was marketed, Wings once again became the target of film producers and were given another opportunity to act on the silver screen, but this time Awie and Wings were offered to act in different films.
There was some disappointment among fans because Awie and Wings were not brought together in a film this time because coincidentally, considering the character, appearance and character of Awie and Joe, they were indeed suitable for playing the role of hero, Romeo. Awie was offered to act in the film Sembilu which contained the songs "Suara Kita" and "Di Ambang Wati" under the direction of Yusof Haslam. Meanwhile, Joe, Wings and their manager Ali Bakar were offered to act in the film Putera, under the direction of Zulkifli M. Osman who flew all the way to Paris, France to make the film including the sensational song "Bernafas Dalam Lumpur" which was also included in the film which featured Syam Visa as Awie's replacement. Even more proud, the film Putera was also inaugurated by the Minister of Culture, Arts and Tourism Dato Sri Sabbaruddin Chik. Both films were released in the same year 1994. In November 1993, Search and Wings held a large-scale Double Trouble concert at the Kuala Lumpur National Stadium which successfully attracted more than 10 thousand spectators.
Split - Awie's resignation, Jojet's second exit - Mel's participation, Black Kembali, Orang Asing, Mel's withdrawal - Mus Masuk, Biru Mata Hitamku, Mr Barbarik and looking for the origin (1994-1998)
The first history of the change of lead singer of Wings occurred in 1994 after Wings successfully performed the Double Trouble concert with Search. Awie, who was already quite integrated into the Wings group and was an image of this rock music group, was suddenly rumored to want to leave Wings at a time of peak popularity following the success of the albums Belenggu Irama, Hukum Karma, Teori Domino, Jerangkung Dalam Almari, Double Trouble (With Search) and Bazooka Penaka. Finally, the news of Awie's resignation from Wings was officially made public and it immediately made loyal fans feel disappointed, teary-eyed and had to accept. Sources found that the news of Awie's resignation was said to be dissatisfied with Joe and several other individuals involved in Wings management who did not want to leave the entertainment company they were under after Wings began actively acting in films, causing them to no longer have any understanding, causing Awie to make the final decision to leave Wings.
Awie has officially sent a letter of resignation as a Wings singer to BMG and terminated the agreement according to the correct channels within the Wings group with the company. The fact is that further turmoil between Awie and Wings is difficult for any entertainment journalist to present to the general public, especially for loyal Wings fans. The news of Awie's withdrawal from Wings is a historical black spot in Wings' entire career and it is indeed the most bitter to swallow for loyal fans so many refused to accept the most bitter news. The album Bazooka Penaka was Awie's last album with Wings in 1993 while the Double Trouble Search and Wings concert was Awie's last concert with Wings which took place at the Kuala Lumpur National Stadium in the same year.
In 1994, after Awie left Wings, Joe, Eddie and Jojet refused to break their wings to disband Wings, so they took the initiative by releasing a compilation album which was also the first album of Wings' struggle without Awie entitled Wings & Superfriends Opera Dalam Kenangan Part 1 & Part 2 which was released in 1994, which combined a little with local rock artists including artists from Indonesia and Singapore. Not long after the album was released, Wings added another black point in the group's career where Jojet decided to withdraw due to drug and heroin addiction for the second time as a reputable drummer and was also quite compatible with Wings because he wanted to follow in Awie's footsteps. The reason was that Joe and Eddie were not strong enough to fight with fans on stage. Jojet's withdrawal due to drug and heroin addiction occurred shortly after the completion of the compilation album Wings & Superfriends Part 1 & 2 and also a month after Awie left Wings.
The news of Jojet's withdrawal was due to the loyalty of his friendship with Awie which seemed to keep a mystery. Not many people know why Jojet suddenly decided to withdraw from the group, which had enjoyed its share of joining Wings since 1990. Jojet was angry, emotional and eventually acted rude, nasty and argued to fight with Joe and Eddie. Finally Joe threw a bottle at Jojet because he was addicted to drugs and heroin and thus acted rude, devil, bastard, pig and dog. It turned out that there was an internal dispute, which had nothing to do with music between Joe, Eddie and Jojet. Jojet was angry because he thought that his Wings friends had interfered in his personal affairs. The atmosphere turned noisy, hot, saturated and boring. Although Jojet was persuaded, he could not be stopped from leaving the Wings group for the second time definitively without Joe and Eddie's coercion.
No less, most of the fans were disappointed with Jojet's action of leaving the Wings group and according to Jojet "we are stupid drummers, we drummers don't understand anything, we are naughty, rude, evil people, Joe and Eddie's beaters, beat Joe and are hated by Eddie. We just became drummers, and after becoming drummers because we became humble. But we are really arrogant and challenging Joe and Eddie". After that, Wings was left with just two, Joe and Eddie. In the same year, Joe and Eddie almost broke their wings and threw in the towel in the arena of fighting for the Malaysian music industry. The withdrawal of Awie and Jojet was a very sad test, making Joe and Eddie almost decide that Wings would be buried. But because they were still loyal and enthusiastic for Wings to continue working, Joe and Eddie were determined to continue.
Since using this type of drug, Joe, who is usually quiet, neat and doesn't like to shout, suddenly changed. Eddie did the same. He had many bad experiences, since using it from 1991 to 1996. In 1995, on Langkawi Island, they ran out of narcotics and sakau because there were none. Joe couldn't get up when the journalist asked for an interview. Only Eddie had to bother to greet the journalist. Now, Wings has denied the notion that by taking drugs an artist can become more creative, on the contrary, without using this illegal substance they have proven to be able to produce good work. "When we made the first to third albums, we didn't use drugs, but the album proved to be the best. So, without drugs we can produce good work. "After the third album, we became users," said Eddie.
Also commented by Joe, before Jojet withdrew from Wings, Jojet had suggested to Joe and Eddie that Black be the founder and mainstay and original member of the Wings group and thus the first album of the Wings group returned to replace him as the drummer of the Wings group. This was agreed by Joe and Eddie. They both took Black back since he played in the group Babylon. Finally, Black accepted Joe and Eddie's offer to return to Wings. In short, Black returned to the Wings's lap as a drummer who coincidentally already had compatibility with Wings. Black surprised fans when he appeared on live television for the first time with Wings in the 1994 Pop Rock semi-final competition by singing three songs from the Wings album Superfriends Opera Dalam Kenangan Part 1 & Part 2, namely "Dia" - Hattan & Wings, "Serati Tidak Bisa jadi Undang" - Amy Search & Wings and "Perhentian" - Joe, Eddie & Black even though the three songs were originally played and recorded by Jojet.
About a year later (1995) Wings returned to active work. Joe became the leader and mainstay of the Wings group and Eddie was the only founder and mainstay and original member of the group continuing the effort to find a replacement for Awie. More than 40 people interested in becoming candidates came to audition for the lead singer of the Wings group. Finally Mel who happened to be looking for a place to become a singer artist managed to eliminate more than 40 other candidates by captivating the taste of choosing Mel definitively to become the lead singer of the Wings group to replace Awie. This means that Mel is also the second generation original artist of the Wings group after Awie.
Not long after that the band produced Wings' sixth studio album which was also the first studio album without Awie's appearance titled Orang Asing released in October 1995. Among the songs from the album that became a hit was the song "Lena Diulit Intan". However, Mel's relationship with Wings did not last long. Mel decided to withdraw from Wings because he admitted that he did not fit the rhythm of Wings' music. After Mel resigned from Wings, the group again found themselves in trouble when Ali Bakar was removed as Wings' manager. However, Joe once again accepted an offer to act in a film as the hero in a film titled Amelia. Despite various suspicions that befell Wings, not long after Joe once again accepted an offer to act in an action movie, comedy as the hero alongside Sasha Saidin Elite and Imuda while Eddie and Black were guest stars in the film titled Wings Dalam Super Star which featured several songs that were loved by many from the album Orang Asing even without Mel who had withdrawn from the Wings group.
Wings were lucky because Mel's place was replaced by Mus, the former lead singer of the group May who was a contemporary of Wings. Rumors that Mus would join Wings had long been circulating after Awie and Mel withdrew. Therefore, after Mel did not get along with Wings, Mus immediately accepted Wings' offer to be with the other three members of Wings' musicians who continued their mission of struggle in the field of national art. In addition, by chance, Mus did have the compatibility to be the lead singer of Wings. Wings' seventh studio album titled Biru Mata Hitamku was Mus's debut album with Wings which was released in September 1996. The song "Biru Mata Hitamku" became a sensational hit. The album won the best album cover category in the 4th Music Industry Awards (AIM). The same year (1996), Wings came out with a special album titled Puisi Aidilfitri which contained six new songs and then in 1997, Wings marketed a compilation album titled J. S Kevin & Wings which contained a bonus song, "Persona Sanubari". The following year, Mus' singing performance became more consistent, more solid, cohesive, energetic and very suitable for rock music, not to mention appearing with two albums in the same year 1998, namely Double Trouble 2 (Together with Search) and the eighth album titled Mencari Asal Usul. The two albums were Mus's very energetic and best voice throughout his involvement as a Wings singer and before. It turns out that Mus' voice has its own uniqueness.
The Age of Fall, Successful Recovery, Best of Wings 2, Mr. Barbarik, Mus Berundur - Awie Kembali, Naga Kramat And The Resurgence Of The Rock Giants (1999-2007)
Ironically, although Wings has gone through various obstacles and challenges, especially when their original lead singer Awie withdrew due to drugs, cocaine and heroin addiction to move solo and successfully became a popular male singer, the country's number 1 male actor, replacing Amy Search as the lead singer and founder and leader of the Search group who also made a successful album Projek Khas entitled Bikin Wilayah (1998) which successfully exploded in the market including being nominated to compete in the 6th Music Industry Awards (AIM 1999) and at the same time the album won the Best Rock Album category of the Music Industry Awards (AIM) and established their own music group which was named Dragon Malaya consisting of Awie (Vocal), Kid (Guitar), Yem Bai (Bass) and Jojet (Drums) in the new millennium 2000, Wings was still able to maintain their reputation in the country's rock music industry even without the presence of Awie who is said to be the heart and soul of the Wings group.
Throughout the period of Awie's withdrawal from Wings, it has had a very deep and negative impact on the group. Without Awie, Wings lost their stardom, fell from their position as the number one rock band in the country, including their stage performances losing their fangs and venom. On the contrary, it gave rise to suspicion when Wings' stage performances were only eligible to be held again at fun fairs and expo sites. Wings appeared as the curtain opener for concerts with other artists. This added to the suspicion when Wings once withdrew at the last minute when they had received an offer to perform with other artists, so that Wings was no longer believed in by the concert organizers. In addition, Wings' achievements declined during the economic crisis that hit the country. Then Wings disappeared from publicity for a long time, so that some fans thought that they had broken up. Wings' name almost disappeared from the national art scene. Wings lost popularity and was no longer as popular as it used to be when Wings was with Awie. There were no fewer fans who often associated Awie's name with Wings being back together.
In 1999 Wings came out with a compilation album titled Best Of Wings 2. The album made a surprise when it exploded in the market where it contained a new song titled "Nasib Kita" which also invited the singer of the famous heavy metal band Mael (Real XPDC) who is also the former singer of XPDC. The song "Nasib Kita" which paired two respected singers namely Mus and Mael has become a hit with many Rock and Heavy metal fans including at the same time successfully boosting Wings' name. Surprisingly the album Best Of Wings 2 also sold more than 45 thousand units in a short period of time.
After almost eight years of separation between Awie and Wings, Awie's name is often mentioned by fans including Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG) Malaysia, who are rumored to want Awie and Wings to reunite to make the album 'Projek Khas' successful even though there are still hearts of Wings members who are hurt by Awie. Shocking publicity news spread in an entertainment magazine that Awie and Joe are said to have met for the first time (since Awie left Wings due to drug addiction, cocaine and heroin) at a music recording studio located in Sungai Buloh Selangor to record a song titled Hidup (Selagi Hidup) a collaboration between Awie, Mus (Wings), Moq (Search) and Ziana Zain while Joe is the producer of the song.
However, Awie and Wings must be open as artists. Not long after, Awie, who was met by Media Hiburan journalists, admitted that only Eddie had been met to discuss the matter of reuniting with the Wings group. Awie admitted that Eddie's heart may still be hurt and resentful towards Awie. This is what increasingly motivates the four Wings members who are still involved in drugs to recover. Initially, Wings received a recommendation to cure drug addiction from Awie, Mel, Jojet, and Bob Lokman who had recovered first. So at that time, Awie, Mel, Jojet, and Bob Lokman came to Kuala Lumpur to tell Joe and Eddie his recovery story and left a piece of newspaper with the name and address of where he received treatment. Finally Wings tried to get treatment from Sham Visa who had been recommended by Awie, Mel, Jojet, and Bob Lokman using Chinese medicine methods.
It was a matter of patience and perseverance, Mus, Joe, Eddie, and Black, finally managed to recover from drugs and in the new millennium 2000 Wings issued a resolution, confirming that they were clean from drugs. Wings became more diligent in performing and carrying out the recording process of their 9th album. In addition, Wings released their latest album titled Mr. Barbarik in the new millennium, 2000. The album was able to heal the wounds in the hearts of Wings members after the various trials that had befallen since Awie's absence. The album is indeed satisfying by featuring 100% rock in all the songs on the album including a duet song between Mus and Asheed (Def Gab C) titled Singa Dan Harimau. A total of three albums (Not including the compilation album, one studio album Double Trouble 2 with Search and a special Raya Aidilfitri album) were produced during Mus's involvement with Wings.
Before the Mr. Barbarik album could be promoted in the market, Mus announced the breaking news of withdrawing from Wings because his relationship with Black had deteriorated again, and their musical differences had diverged too far, while the album was being well received by loyal fans. However, Joe, Eddie and Black had to respect Mus's final decision even though the three of them felt aggrieved by Mus's decision. Wings also denied the claim that Mus' withdrawal from Wings was because he was disappointed with the news that Awie would be returning to Wings after he had recovered from drug addiction, with the help of Chinese medical therapy, Awie distanced himself and did not touch the forbidden item again to apologize to Black because Awie had been fighting with Black since 1990. After Mus was confirmed to have stepped down, his place will be legally replaced by the original singer of Wings, namely Awie. Mus's plans to form his latest group were moot. However, Mus's proposal turned out to be wrong because he had made the right decision to return to the fold of his original group May.
Awie officially rejoined Wings at the end of 2000. After eight years, Wings and Awie met again for the first time at the wedding of M. Nasir and Marlia Musa. During that reunion, Wings and Awie could not hold back their tears, hugging and shedding tears, especially between Awie and Eddie who met and reprimanded each other for the first time since Awie left Wings in 1994. With the opportunity of that first meeting, Wings and Awie joined forces to entertain the wedding with several songs. It became a reality for the fans. By consensus, the merger of Wings and Awie has fulfilled the requests of many parties and cured the longing of the loyal fans of Wings. During 2001, Wings and Awie entered the studio and spent five months locked in the studio which will release their tenth studio album. Next, in April 2002, they produced an album 'Projek Khas' which named Wings & Awie entitled Naga Kramat. The song "Ranggi Metropolis" became the main sensational song. The reunion of Wings and Awie and the production of the Naga Kramat album were also to test the extent of the fans' acceptance.
In 2003, Wings and Awie were given full trust for the first time by Planet Hollywood Kuala Lumpur to hold a mini concert (Sunday Night Live) for four consecutive weeks at the star-rated venue. It turned out to be a surprise, the reunion between Wings and Awie to experience the golden age of their popularity as before became the most accurate statement that had been expected by many parties and fans. The name Wings and their performances are back to star status, fierce and poisonous in terms of impact. There is no doubt that Wings are back on the throne as the number one rock band in the country. This is also proven when every Wings performance at Planet Hollywood, the response is extraordinary according to the organizers.
So much so that fans describe Awie as Wings as well as Wings, Wings is Awie who is like aur and a cliff. With the reunion of Wings and Awie, it has received an extraordinary warm welcome and has been long awaited by loyal fans who miss it. Indeed, without Awie, Wings cannot afford to fly higher. Wings are no longer eligible to perform at fun fairs and expo sites. Since the reunion of Wings and Awie, loyal fans have refused to want them to split up for the second time. In 2004, Wings and Awie made the right decision when they reached a unanimous and final agreement to remain with Wings after being studied in terms of the warm welcome of loyal fans and the success for their own success for their group. The names Wings and Awie are no longer used, instead they agreed to return and maintain the use of the name Wings. This is because Wings does not want fans to be confused about the difference between the names Wings and Awie.
2006 Wings also held a concert at the Orange Club Kuala Lumpur which also sold out the tickets sold on the day of the concert alone until hundreds of fans were desperate to get tickets.
The concert was a recording night concert for a 'live' album for the first time in Wings' career, which they had previously planned to release a 'Live Concert' album but failed. Wings' first 'Live Concert' album titled 'Alive 2006 The Legend Arises Wings Alive 2006 @ KL Orange Club' arrived on the market in 2007 in the form of a CD and a video CD. After that Wings were once again called to rock Planet Hollywood Kuala Lumpur. Wings created history when they managed to break the record as the most popular artist and the most performances at the star-rated Planet Hollywood Kuala Lumpur. This is Wings' advantage compared to other artists, especially since the reunion of Wings and Awie.
This proves that to create a music group, Wings should not only rely on the credibility of the singer alone but must take the initiative to ensure Wings continues to survive and maintain its popularity as the most influential rock group in Malaysia. So this is the history, experience, ups and downs of Wings throughout their career in the art world. In 2007 Wings agreed to market a special Raya album with Mus because there were several songs when Wings with Mus had not been made into an album.
2008 Wings once held a mini concert at Planet Hollywood Bukit Bintang Kuala Lumpur. This time the concert was enlivened with former members of the Wings group, namely Mel, Mus, Sham and Jojet, as well as several guest artists such as Hattan, Ito, Hillary Ang and Kid (Search). This concert was also released in the form of a Video Cakra Padat (VCD) and a Cakera Padat (CD) in 2008.
In 2009 Wings also held a thrilling concert at the Hard Rock Cafe Kuala Lumpur. As usual and expected, ticket sales were definitely sold out in a short period of time so many fans were desperate to get tickets.
Double Trouble Concert (DT), Live Opera Orchestra, Rockestra (Tuxedo) And Album Conquering The Cosmos (2010-2014)
The last time Search and Wings held a Double Trouble concert was at the end of 1993 at the National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur where it managed to impress over 10 thousand spectators. After 17 years, Search and Wings have joined forces again to hold a Double Trouble (DT) concert on May 1, 2010 at Bukit Kiara in Kuala Lumpur. What is more interesting about the concert, tickets were sold out on the day of the concert and managed to impress 18 thousand spectators. Awie, who was once a singer for the Search group, did not miss out on performing the song that many people loved a while ago, Nur Nilam Sari. The big concert that went smoothly was a rare phenomenon besides it managed to make an unexpected profit and the cost of stage expenses which cost 100 thousand Malaysian ringgit. (22$) RapidKL and Light Rail Transit (LRT) bus services were also provided by the organizers for the convenience of fans who did not want to miss out on watching the large-scale concert. Not long after, the DT concert was held in Johor Bharu. The concert was used as a recording night to release the concert album in the form of a digital video disc.
Wings made history when they emerged as the first band in Asia and the third in the world after the Scorpions and Metallica to successfully hold a performance accompanied by orchestral music. Wings was given recognition by the Opera House, Istana Budaya (IB) to use the prestigious IB Sari Theatre stage space to perform. Wings began their move to IB, by holding a concert there, as a sign of appreciation after 26 years in the arts arena. The concert, named Wings Opera Hidup Concert which was held from April 29, to 02 May 2011, combined Wings with the National Symphony Orchestra (OSK) on a stage synonymous with theatrical performances. A total of 43 musicians accompanied by 16 choir singers made for a concert that was well-attended. The concert also invited former Wings members Mel, Mus, Sham and Jojet. This concert also featured Superfriends who also enlivened the concert such as Ramli Sarip, M. Nasir, Nashrudin Elias, nicknamed "Nash" (Lefthanded), Yantzen Juniwan, Mus May, Hattan, Lan Typewriter, Rosli Mohalim, Man Kidal, Hamzah Mohd Taib (nicknamed "Kid Search" (Lefthanded), (Lefthanded is a Malaysian rock band formed in 1979. The band is led by Man Kidal. Originally they were called The Lefthanded but later the word Lefthanded was retained.) Hillary Ang, Yan, (Lefthanded), Edrie Hashim, Ujang, (Exist) (Exists is a Malaysian rock band), Yazid Search and Lola.
Wings were once again given the trust by IB for the 2nd time to fly again to IB. Featuring a great guitarist from Indonesia, Ian Antono from the band God Bless, the concert was themed Wings Rockestra Concert which was held on April 26-30, 2013, to celebrate the 28th anniversary of the group's establishment. There were a few songs that Wings brought that were different from the previous songs. Once again featuring the OSK lineup while Joe was the music director of this concert. The 2nd appearance at IB was also the first time Wings was directed to appear in unusual attire, namely 'Sut or Tuxedo'. Wings' appearance dressed in this extraordinary image received praise and excitement from many parties including fans because it looked even more neat, sleek and handsome like a corporate member. Wings has also marketed in the form of compact discs & digital video discs for this 2nd IB concert.
After 12 years of not marketing an album, Wings will appear with their latest album, the 11th, titled Menakluq Kosmos. Wings' joy for fans was dampened when Wings received a report that four songs had been pirated before the album was marketed. Wings was clearly angry with the irresponsible individual's attitude so they filed a police report at the Taman Melawati Police Headquarters (IPD). Adding to the suspicions is the fact that the publishing company KRU Music failed to take responsibility in the case so that Wings is no longer able to trust the company to collaborate again in the future. Despite all that, Wings still promoted and marketed the 11th studio album in 2014. Although Wings was hit by the allegations of the case, Wings was still proud after the video clip of the song "Ingatkan Dia" had become millions of views on YouTube. (19 million in 10 years)
Wings Concert, 30 Years, Joe's Retirement, Wings & Superfriends Concert and Original Member Syam Returns After 29 Years 2015-present
For the 3rd time, Wings will be rocking IB again on June 10-16, 2015. This time, Wings will bring a different musical accompaniment compared to before. Wings will perform with the National Traditional Orchestra (OTK) which will be given the name of the concert 'Bongkar Ta' (Unpack it) kan Melayu Hilang Di Dunia' (Are Malays Missing in the World?). Wings will join forces with a group of traditional musical accompaniment. Wings will perform at the prestigious venue dressed in full traditional Malay chieftaincy attire. Awie will also not be left out to perform a Malay silat invitational act. Wings will bring a little bit of a difference in their songs compared to before. The performance is considered the best in 2015. Wings will continue to be trusted compared to other artists by the IB to perform at the prestigious venue.
Wings took about five months before the concert date on October 31, 2015 to take to the field by touring the entire country to launch a large-scale ticket sales promotion while accompanied by the unification of several high-powered motorcycle club groups such as Harley Davidson and others led by Awie. In addition, before the concert date, Wings also launched promotions for the big concert such as a gathering of Malaysian artists with the Sayap2Wings fan club at the Swiss-Garden Hotel & Residences Kuala Lumpur and not long after that Wings successfully held the 'Highlights of Wings 30 Years Concert' at Dataran Merdeka Kuala Lumpur.
On October 31, 2015 Wings held a large-scale and historic concert themed 'Wings 30 Years Concert' at the Merdeka Stadium Kuala Lumpur which successfully captivated more than 20 thousand spectators. The curtain of the concert was opened by several guest artists, namely Dato Hattan, Ito Blues Gang, Afdlin Shauki, Azlan & Typewriter, Razlan Kristal, Aweera, Bila (AF 2015), One Nation Emcees as well as comedy performances by Saiful Apek and Yassin Yahya. As soon as Wings appeared, the audience became even more excited, surprised and excited when Wings appeared to reminisce by dressing in 80s rock images. This concert was also a charity concert to prepare to donate to the victims of the upcoming floods. Awie appeared in the image of the legendary wrestler of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) The Ultimate Warrior. The great and energetic concert was enlivened by former Wings members, namely Mel, Mus, Sham and Jojet. Wings performed 28 popular songs including a popular new song "Ingatkan Dia". Although the weather was rainy that night, the audience did not move at all until the concert, which went smoothly, ended at about 3 am. Various facilities have been provided for loyal fans, such as providing affordable hotel accommodation and a shuttle bus service for the concert date.
The withdrawal, removal or replacement of members including singers in a artist group in Malaysia has become a common thing including world famous group artists such as Nirvana, Metallica, Scorpions, Guns N' Roses and others. The group Wings is also no exception to this problem, as previous members namely Awie, Mel, Mus, Sham, Black and Jojet have left to change sides or withdraw from Wings. Recently, rumors of Joe's turn have also started to spread and are being talked about on several internet blog sites. At the end of 2016, fans were shocked by the rumors that Joe had been removed by Awie from Wings.
The rumors spread on several internet blog sites in the blink of an eye and immediately became a thousand and one questions by fans through social media. However, Awie refused to comment on the rumors and they asked all parties to be given space to resolve the rumor crisis. In addition, Awie denied that Joe had been removed from Wings and Awie admitted that Joe was still with Wings. This is because Awie wants to calm the situation of fans who are so restless with the rumors. Meanwhile, Joe often avoids being interviewed by journalists. Also causing a thousand questions, Wings appeared without Joe in an invitation concert in two different places, namely in Penang and Melaka. As long as Awie and Joe do not issue any valid answers about the rumors, the fans are so restless and eager to know the real answer to the authentic news.
After several months of rumors spreading widely on social media, finally in early 2017 Awie announced and confirmed the authenticity of the news that Joe had officially resigned from Wings. Sources found that it was due to Joe due to the failure of the concert in Kota Kinabalu Sabah which was supposed to take place in December 2016. Before that, in early November 2016 Wings had successfully held a mini warm-up concert at the Hard Rock Cafe Kuala Lumpur in conjunction with the concert that would take place in Kota Kinabalu Sabah at the end of 2016 but failed. The mini concert was also Joe's last concert with Wings.
Further news from reporters once again failed to interview Awie and Joe. Even though Joe had been confirmed to have flown and taken his own path, Awie still refused to comment further to reporters about the turmoil surrounding Joe's resignation because he wanted to maintain the spirit of harmony between his star friend (Joe) and other close parties, and conversely Joe also refused to comment further to reporters about the turmoil that befell him with Wings. Awie wanted to cut the story short, revealing to reporters 'LET IT BE A SECRET' and only the four of them (Wings), Syam, Edrie and a few other parties close to them kept a secret about Joe's resignation from Wings.
The rift between the Joes from the group also slowed down Wings so that even loyal fans could not hide their disappointment which had already become a topic of heated conversation and great criticism on social media because of the compatibility between Joe and Wings who had been together for so long and were already considered like brothers. Fans thought Wings were incomplete without Joe who was like a Keris Without a Sheath. This unfortunate news was also a black spot that befell Wings' career. Now Wings are left with three, namely Awie, Eddie and Black. Awie still fought for Wings even without Joe who Wings loved. In addition, Awie has made a final decision or a final word that Wings will not look for a replacement for its main guitarist (Apart from Syam and Edrie as invited main guitarists) and is also not hostile to Joe, or Joe himself who is also not hostile to Awie. According to Awie, Wings does not care without Joe's services because Awie believes that there are still many other main guitarists who have great talent including Syam (the original main guitarist of Wings) if Wings wants to need Joe's services as a replacement for him as a main guitarist.
However, Joe admits that he still supports Wings openly. Awie and Joe never have feelings of resentment or hatred between each other. Meanwhile, Awie admits that the three of them are more comfortable in Wings. Not long after, Joe got a new wind by presenting his newest group, Prime Domestic, after 28 years of going through ups and downs with Wings. Meanwhile, the first appearance of Prime Domestic, Joe asked all parties that only Wings know and that no one else is still questioning the turmoil of his withdrawal from Wings. Joe also commented that the emergence of Prime Domestic was a healthy competition and not a jealous competition with the group Wings and others. Until now, loyal fans still hope that the turmoil that hit between Joe and Wings can end the agreement so that Joe will return to the fold of Wings, which is now said to have broken one wing. However, Joe feels that he will not return to Wings because he is too comfortable moving in his own way and his golden age as an artist has ended due to age.
For the 4th time, Wings is shaking up IB again by doing it for the first time without Joe as the lead guitarist since he joined Wings in 28 years. The concert themed Wings & Superfriends - Belenggu Irama - took place on 6, 7, 8 and 9 April 2017. The name Syam (Former original lead guitarist of Wings) is often mentioned by fans to replace Joe's vacancy for this concert because it is the most appropriate choice with the theme of the first album Belenggu Irama. This concert is a charity concert to help artists who have raised the rock rhythm who have now been afflicted by misfortune, persecution and hardship, especially for Yazid (Search) and others. The concert was also enlivened by the country's no. 1 singer, Siti Nurhaliza who performed the song "Sejati", besides Hattan, M. Nasir, Ito Blues Gang, Razlan (Kristal), Nash, Jaclyn Victor, Liza Hanim, Sahara Yaakob and many others.
Even more proud was that the concert tickets were sold out in four consecutive nights. After Wings successfully performed at IB for the 4th time in April 2017, Awie, Eddie and Black agreed to use the name Wings & Superfriends because Wings had reached an agreement to use the services of two invited lead guitarists, Syam and Edrie, as Superfriends. About a year later, in 2018, Syam and Edrie officially joined the Wings group, making it 5 members, while Awie was the leader and mainstay of the Wings group. Syam and fans did not expect that Syam, who was involved as the founder, mainstay and original member of the Wings group, had returned to the Wings group since 2017 after 29 years, of leaving Wings in 1988, even though Syam was very little known to most of Wings' hardcore fans since the beginning of Joe's participation in the Wings group.
Filmography
Besides being popular as a rock band in their homeland, Wings also did not miss out on venturing into the film industry. Wings' first film was a special appearance in the film Mat Som in 1990. In 1992, Wings was offered a film role. It turned out that Wings' first film, Pemburu Bayang, which was shown in cinemas in 1993, had an extraordinary impact and exploded in cinemas when it appeared as the first Malay film to break the stage in Malaysia. Wings became increasingly popular after successfully proving themselves in two artistic careers, namely group singing and filmmaking. After the album Bazooka Penaka was released in 1993, Wings became a hot topic for film producers after their popularity reached its peak. Awie and Joe have starred in the role of heroes or main characters in different films.
According to the film producer and director, Awie and Joe are indeed suitable to play the role of heroes because they both meet the criteria, style, attractive appearance and their own natural talents. In addition, Eddie and Black have also been guest actors in several films including Jojet who was still with Wings at the time. Until now, Awie is still active and maintains his popularity as a movie star hero or main character offered by any film director. Meanwhile, Joe admits that his soul pays more attention to the field of music and his career as a lead guitarist even though Joe has rejected several offers to act in films as a hero character. Until now, Joe still maintains his popularity as a respected lead guitarist in the country.
